Hotels in the burg

Does anyone have any good recommendations for hotels in the area? Is it just better to go into Manhattan? What about downtown brooklyn?

We finally have our very own Hotel at 235 Meeker Avenue. http://www.hotellejolie.com/, 718.625.2100. Apparently it's pretty good, although I don't know anyone who has stayed there yet. Until now, I have always directed people to the Best Western on Greenpoint Avenue in Long Island City.

If you want Downtown Brooklyn, there's a Marriott down there but it's $$$.

don't forget the greenpoint ymca on the corner of meserole and lorimer. this 100-year-old building is temporary home to euro backpackers and down-on-their-luck new yorkers. with econo rooms going for less than $50 a night, it's no surprise.
